PPWCMA response to white paper release

The recently released Victorian Government Land and Biodiversity White paper "Securing Our Natural Future" has signalled the merger of the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority with Melbourne Water and the Central Coastal Board

On Monday 7 December 2009, the Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, Gavin Jennings, announced a major policy initiative of the Victorian Government called Securing Our Natural Future, a Land and Biodiversity White Paper.  This White Paper sets out a new framework for action that will significantly change the way Victoria’s natural environment is managed.

Included in this announcement is a merger of the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority with Melbourne Water and the Central Coastal Board to form the “Melbourne Water & Catchment Authority”.  This is a significant step forward designed to deliver more integrated coastal, catchment and waterways management for the Port Phillip and Westernport region.

The Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority has welcomed the White Paper and believes this merger will improve integration and efficiency and will provide long term benefits for the environment of this region.  The Catchment Management Authority is now starting work with Melbourne Water, the Central Coastal Board and the Department of Sustainability and Environment to plan the formation of the Melbourne Water & Catchment Authority and a smooth transition to a new management structure.  An excellent relationship already exists between the participants in the merger so it is expected that benefits of this merger will start to be seen in the near future.
